Trees add beauty and value to your property โ but a dangerous tree is a serious liability. Every year on Long Island, storms bring down weakened trees onto homes, cars, and power lines. Here are the warning signs that a tree needs to come down.
1. Dead or Dying Branches
Large dead branches โ especially in the upper canopy โ can fall at any time. If more than 50% of the tree's crown is dead, the tree is in serious decline and should be evaluated for removal. Dead branches are brittle and unpredictable. They don't need wind to fall.
2. Trunk Damage and Cavities
Vertical cracks, seams, or large cavities in the trunk indicate internal decay. A tree can look fine on the outside while being hollow inside. If you can see into the trunk or the bark is falling off in large sections, the tree's structural integrity is compromised.
3. Fungal Growth at the Base
Mushrooms or shelf fungi growing at the base of a tree or on the root flare are a major red flag. These fungi feed on decaying wood โ their presence means the roots or lower trunk are rotting. A tree with root rot can topple over in moderate wind, even with a full canopy of green leaves.
4. Leaning Suddenly
Many trees grow at a natural lean โ that's normal. But if a tree has recently started leaning, or you see cracked soil or exposed roots on one side, the root system may be failing. A sudden lean is an emergency. Keep people and vehicles away and call a professional immediately.
5. Too Close to Your Home
A large tree with branches overhanging your roof is a risk during every storm. Even healthy trees can lose major limbs in high winds. If a tree is within striking distance of your home, pool, or driveway, it's worth having an arborist assess whether it should be pruned back or removed entirely.
Don't Wait for the Storm
The best time to remove a dangerous tree is before it causes damage. Hurricane season starts in June. If you have concerns about any tree on your property, get a professional evaluation now while scheduling is easier and the weather is cooperative.
